Tie-Dye Searches Hit 3.4 Million as Sales Data Reveals America’s Favorite Colors
US Google searches for tie-dye reached approximately 3.4 million in a single month earlier this year, while new sales data reveals the colors Americans are actually buying.
Search estimates sourced through Glimpse show that interest reached approximately 3.4 million searches between February 8 and March 7, 2026.
Although the initial surge has since settled, tie-dye generated approximately 1 million US searches in the latest month analyzed, up 20% year on year.
The continued interest is also visible in what people are buying. Rainbow tie-dye is America’s clear favorite, according to a new analysis of 12 months of hand-dyed apparel sales across the United States.
Free Spirited Clothing analyzed purchases made between August 1, 2025 and July 31, 2026 to identify the color families shoppers chose most often nationally and in each state.
Rainbow/Multi accounted for 22.51% of classified purchases nationwide, placing it comfortably ahead of Blue at 16.90% and Green at 15.76%.
Its lead was even more pronounced at state level. Of the 46 states with enough sales data for a winner to be called, 43 chose Rainbow/Multi as their most popular tie-dye color family.
Only three states broke from the national trend. Maine preferred Blue, while Montana and West Virginia chose Green.
The analysis also uncovered local preferences hidden beneath each state’s overall winner. Tennessee bought Yellow & Gold tie-dye at almost twice the national rate, Idaho showed unusually strong demand for Purple, and Kansas over-indexed for Red & Orange.
Tie-dye search interest in 2026
The supplied US Google search data shows a sharp rise in interest during early 2026, followed by a lower but still substantial level of monthly demand.
| Search period | Estimated US searches | Change |
|---|---|---|
| February 8 to March 7, 2026 | Approximately 3.4 million | Peak recorded in the supplied data |
| Latest available month analyzed | Approximately 1 million | Up 20% year on year |
The spike came during a period of renewed fashion attention for tie-dye and bold color.
Naomi Osaka made headlines at the Australian Open in January after wearing a turquoise-and-green tie-dye look created with Nike and designer Robert Wun.
Celebrity looks and runway appearances can show what is attracting attention, but first-party sales data provides a clearer view of the colors shoppers choose when they spend their money.
America’s favorite tie-dye colors
The national ranking shows that shoppers favor colorful and versatile tie-dye palettes.
Rainbow/Multi represented more than one in five classified purchases, while Blue and Green together accounted for almost a third.
| National rank | Tie-dye color family | Share of purchases |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rainbow/Multi | 22.51% |
| 2 | Blue | 16.90% |
| 3 | Green | 15.76% |
| 4 | Red, White & Blue | 10.52% |
| 5 | Pink | 9.54% |
| 6 | Purple | 7.23% |
| 7 | Pastel | 7.03% |
| 8 | Black & Gray | 4.68% |
| 9 | Earth & Autumn | 2.72% |
| 10 | Red & Orange | 2.62% |
| 11 | Yellow & Gold | 0.48% |
Which tie-dye color does each state prefer?
Rainbow/Multi ranked first in 43 of the 46 states that met the study’s publication threshold.
California, New York, Texas and Florida were among the states choosing Rainbow.
Only three qualifying states broke from the national favorite.
| State | Favorite color | Share of state purchases |
|---|---|---|
| Maine | Blue | 22.59% |
| Montana | Green | 24.48% |
| West Virginia | Green | 18.83% |
The remaining 43 qualifying states chose Rainbow/Multi.
Five geographies did not meet the minimum threshold of 300 classified units, so no winner has been published for them.
| Result | Number | States and district |
|---|---|---|
| Rainbow/Multi ranked first | 43 states | Includes California, New York, Texas and Florida |
| Another color ranked first | 3 states | Maine, Montana and West Virginia |
| Below publication threshold | 4 states and DC | Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, Wyoming and the District of Columbia |
The states buying the most rainbow tie-dye
Louisiana had America’s strongest preference for Rainbow/Multi, with the color family accounting for 29.90% of classified purchases in the state.
Oregon placed second, followed by Utah, Minnesota and Washington.
| Rank | State | Rainbow/Multi share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Louisiana | 29.90% |
| 2 | Oregon | 28.21% |
| 3 | Utah | 27.05% |
| 4 | Minnesota | 26.38% |
| 5 | Washington | 26.17% |
Louisiana also recorded the most decisive state result. Rainbow/Multi finished 13.43 percentage points ahead of second-place Green.
Where America’s tie-dye choices are closest
Not every state produced an obvious winner.
Connecticut was almost evenly divided between Rainbow/Multi and Blue, with only 0.12 percentage points separating them.
Maine’s Blue victory over Rainbow/Multi was nearly as close, while Pennsylvania chose Rainbow/Multi over Green by just 0.15 percentage points.
| State | Closest contest | Winning margin |
|---|---|---|
| Connecticut | Rainbow/Multi over Blue | 0.12 percentage points |
| Maine | Blue over Rainbow/Multi | 0.13 percentage points |
| Pennsylvania | Rainbow/Multi over Green | 0.15 percentage points |
The strongest local tie-dye preferences
Looking beyond the winning color in each state reveals where particular palettes are bought at a much higher rate than they are nationally.
Tennessee’s demand for Yellow & Gold was the standout finding. Shoppers in the state purchased the color family at 1.96 times the national rate.
| State | Color family | Purchase rate compared with national rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tennessee | Yellow & Gold | 1.96x |
| Montana | Green | 1.55x |
| Idaho | Purple | 1.48x |
| Kansas | Red & Orange | 1.43x |
Why rainbow tie-dye continues to lead
Abby, a spokesperson at Free Spirited Clothing, said:
“Tie-dye never completely disappears, but it changes with each generation. One of the biggest misconceptions around it is that it’s outdated or belongs to one particular era.
Nostalgia is definitely part of the appeal, but today’s tie-dye goes far beyond recreating a 1960s look. There are different colors, patterns and styles, and because pieces are individually hand-dyed, people are getting something that feels much more personal.
What’s particularly interesting this year is seeing the search behavior alongside what people actually buy. Millions of searches tell us tie-dye is attracting attention again, while the sales data shows us which colors people choose when they’re actually spending their money.”
She added:
“Rainbow might dominate the map, but when you look underneath the number one color, America becomes much more varied.
Those differences are one of the reasons tie-dye has such staying power. Someone looking for bright rainbow colors can find that, but so can someone who prefers greens, earthy colors, pastels or something much more understated.
The fact that search interest is still 20% higher than last year suggests this isn’t simply one viral moment. People are still actively looking for tie-dye months after that initial spike.”
Methodology
Free Spirited Clothing analyzed its hand-dyed apparel sales across US states and the District of Columbia during the 12 full months from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026.
Products were assigned to a locked color family before analysis.
Memberships, accessories and jewelry, bundles, mystery products, printed graphic tees, tie-dye kits, socks and international shipments were excluded.
A state’s number one color was only published where at least 300 classified units were available.
Alaska, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, North Dakota and Wyoming did not meet this threshold and therefore have no published winner.
State over-index figures compare each color family’s share within a state with that color’s national share, with a minimum of 30 units of the relevant color required within the state.
Only shares, rankings and index values are published. Absolute sales, revenue and order volumes are not disclosed.
Search figures are based on US Google search estimates sourced through Glimpse. Searches for tie-dye reached approximately 3.4 million between February 8 and March 7, 2026. The latest available monthly figure was approximately 1 million searches, representing a 20% year-on-year increase.
